Cake help?

I am not a cake decorator, but I would like to get better. Suggestions? I taught myself to knit online so I'm thinking some ubber cake expert out there can point me in the right direction. My daughters 7th birthday cake. Not BAD...but not good either. I don't want to be perfect by any means. Just something I can be more proud to show. LOL

Butterflies are always good! I could not even get close to that. I usually get toys and put them on the top of the cake.... "cheating"

I wish I were more of a decorator too, but I think that I have a bit of a perfectionist attitude when it comes to the whole thing.

I think your cake looks great!

Hi, just found your blog through farmchicks, I think. :) Your cake is cute, I'm sure that your daughter loved it. As for a cute, easy way to decorate cakes...I think I can help. You'll need a coloring book page with a design that you like (this will be reversed so it doesn't work for words), waxed paper and cake decorating gels in the colors of your choice. Lay the waxed paper over the coloring book page(tape it to the table if it helps) and trace the design with the gel (I usually use black for this). Very carefully, lift the waxed paper and lay it lightly on the frosted cake making sure that your design is completely transferred, then carefully lift the paper off again. You should have a pretty good outline at this point, but you may want to go over it again to perfect it. Then you just fill it in with the colors of your choice. Super fun, super easy. Wilton used to sell clear gel that you could tint with icing colors, but I'm not sure if they still do...really good for custom colors though. Hope that helped. :)

Ooops! Thought of another one...been awhile since I've done cake decorating so this is good brain excercise. :) You can use a cookie cutter to lightly press a design into a cake then use a small round tip to outline the design and fill it in. This one is cute and easy if you are using real toys to decorate the top and just want to accent around them. Have fun!

I think practice will make perfect. I'm sure the birthday girl thought it was beautiful -- afterall, it was made with love. And trust me, it's much better than anything I've attempted!
PS. I'm having a drawing for an embellished Country Living apron on my blog-site. Head on over to enter and maybe you can be wearing the apron when you try your next cake!
